COOK FALLS SHORT IN BID FOR SAVEMART 350 SPOT
SONOMA, CA, June 24, 2006 -- An extra half-second here or there would have helped Chris Cook Friday night at Infineon Raceway.
Cook, driver for the Christina Marie Motorsports team, fell short of qualifying for the NASCAR Nextel Cup SaveMart 350 while driving the No. 49 Dodge, usually occupied by Kevin Lepage and the BAM Racing team.
Cook missed out on qualifying after he ran into some debris on the track, forcing him to slow down. Prior to that, he had turned in practice laps timed as high as the seventh fastest overall.
Cook was hired last week to replace Lepage because of his experience on the Sonoma road course.
Cook, who placed 28th in last year's race at Sonoma, was one of five drivers who failed to qualify for Sunday's race. His top speed of 89.642 mph was just shy of the speed of Brandon Ash, who earned the 43rd and final spot in the starting grid.
Clint Bowyer, who has been coached by Cook recently, qualified 28th for the race with a top speed of 91.381 mph.
Sunday's race will be televised live on FOX, beginning at 3 p.m., EST.
